About Our Nutrition and Dietetics Services

When should I see a Nutritionist/Dietitian?

Below are some signs that it might be time to see a dietitian:

  • You want to improve your diet, but not sure of what steps to take.

  • You’re struggling to lose weight.

  • You have started experiencing uncomfortable digestive symptoms such as bloating, constipation or diarrhoea.

  • You doctor has diagnosed you with high cholesterol, high blood pressure or fatty liver disease.

  • You’ve just been diagnosed with Diabetes or need help managing your existing Diabetes.

  • Your doctor has diagnosed you with PCOS.

  • You struggle with iron deficiency and fatigue.

  • You’re about to undergo weight loss surgery / have previously had weight loss surgery.

  • You’ve recently decided to go Vegan or Vegetarian and need some tips on making the most out of your diet.

  • You suspect that you have a food allergy or intolerance.

How many consultations will I need?

The number of times you will need to see the Dietitian depends on the reason for your appointment. Some people may only require one or two visits for more simple issues, while others will require more frequent follow up for management of more complex issues. Our Dietitian will be able to tell you how many times they will need to see you.

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

Please bring any relevant referrals, recent blood test results and medication lists. You might get more value out of your consult if you keep a food diary for at least a week prior to your appointment, as this will assist our Dietitian to assess your diet more accurately.

Weight Loss

Achieving and maintaining a comfortable, healthy body weight is generally considered to be a balancing act between the food and drink we consume and the amount of physical activity we do.

For many people, it is so much more complex than that. It is very much like putting together parts of a complex jigsaw puzzle. You need to identify all the pieces of the puzzle before you can put them together in a way that is right for you.

Most of us know that if we eat less (or less of some foods!) and exercise more, we will lose weight. What most of us don’t realise is that solving the puzzle of weight loss involves more than just these two factors.

Most people have tried to lose weight, often many times over many years, trying different diets and exercise plans, with varying levels of success or failure. If this sounds like you, you are not alone. Very few people who diet are able to keep that weight off, and research has confirmed this. 95% of dieters put their weight back on over a few years, and many will regain more.

We are all different. Advantage Healthcare & Physiotherapy want to help you piece together what is an individual, and often complex, puzzle that will help you to:

  • Enjoy food without feeling guilty

  • Increase your eating awareness

  • Enjoy being active

  • Achieve and maintain a healthy, comfortable weight for you, without being deprived of food or quality of life.

Diabetes

Diabetes occurs when the body’s insulin does not work properly. Insulin is important because it helps the body convert glucose (a type of sugar) into energy. Our bodies need insulin to help control our glucose and energy levels to function normally. In people with diabetes, glucose can remain in the bloodstream, rather than being converted into energy. These raised blood glucose levels over time can lead to a range of health issues.

These health issues include:

  • Heart attacks and stroke

  • Kidney failure

  • Loss of eyesight

  • Nerve damage (loss of feeling in hands and feet)

  • Foot Amputation

The important thing to remember is that when diabetes is well managed you will feel better and reduce your risk of developing these long term complications associated with diabetes. Establishing a healthy lifestyle can help you manage your blood glucose levels and reduce this risk. This includes healthy eating, regular physical activity, and achieving and maintaining a comfortable healthy weight.

Our Advantage Healthcare & Physiotherapy Dietitian can help you make healthy lifestyle changes that will improve your health and wellbeing, manage your blood glucose levels, and reduce your risk of diabetes complications.

Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes; whether you have just been diagnosed or have had diabetes for a while; we can help you. We can help you develop an eating and activity plan to suit your needs and lifestyle and help you to set realistic and achievable goals to manage your diabetes.
