Joint traction involves pressure applied to a joint in a direction, which causes separation of the joint surfaces, this pressure can be sustained or it can be intermittent where tension is applied then released alternatively.
This may be performed:
- Manually by a therapist or
- Via mechanical traction apparatus
Traction is generally useful for the treatment of nerve root compression/radicular pain in which the pressure applied distracts the joint allowing for decompression of the painful area, and to improve joint movement.
