Physiotherapists often use electrical therapy modalities as part of their treatment of both acute and chronic conditions. It should be avoided over areas of broken skin or skin irritation, over areas where metal plates are located internally, and over the torso for anyone with a pace maker.
Aims of treatment with Electrical therapy include:
- Pain relief and reduction of inflammation
- Increased blood flow to an area
- Relaxation of tense muscles
- Muscle stimulation (to improve muscle activation)
Different types of electrical therapy that you may have heard of include TENS, Interferential and Ultrasound therapy. Ask your physiotherapist at Advantage Healthcare and Physiotherapy if any of these modalities are appropriate for you.
