Cupping is an ancient Chinese practice where the cup is positioned on the area to be treated, suction is applied and a vacuum is created within the cup to draw the skin and underlying tissue into the cup. This is commonly used in conjunction with Physiotherapy, Remedial Massage and Myotherapy to facilitate tissue effects.
At Advantage Healthcare and Physiotherapy, the use of cups is used strictly from a musculo-skeletal point of view. Primarily, they are used for increasing blood flow, breaking up soft tissue adhesions and deactivating trigger points.
Cupping therapy can be a very effective technique when used in the correct circumstances. Because suction is an integral part of the treatment, there can be some skin bruising after the treatment. This is perfectly normal and is not indicative of tissue injury – some blood leaks out of your body's blood vessels due to the suction of the cups.
Please don't hesitate to talk with your treating therapist regarding this technique.
